„Metanje" — the most prestigious discipline of strength and skill, in which Radovan Zeković holds the world record.
The shoulder stone throw is an almost everyday contest among young men in the skill and strength of throwing.
The game consists of throwing a large stone in a manner peculiar to it. The arms are pressed close to the body, the forearm raised vertically so that the hand comes level with the shoulder. With the other hand, a stone weighing thirty to forty livres is placed upon the shoulder; a motion is made with the shoulder, and, extending the arm at the same moment, the stone is hurled with great force to a distance of twenty-five feet. We are convinced that, besides experience, an uncommon constitution, strength and skill are required.
The throwing ground requires no special conditions. A skilled young man takes a stone — larger or smaller, or, more rarely, a cannonball — and makes the throw from a marked spot. Such a young man is usually known, in his own village and in neighboring ones, for the distance of his throw.
At the spot where the stone lands, a „biljega" (marker) is placed — a stick driven into the ground or a small stone set down. The others continue throwing until someone surpasses the distance achieved.
The stone is thrown from a marked line without a run-up — pure strength and technique, with no approach. Distance is measured, and the winner is whoever throws the stone the farthest.
The stone is thrown with a run-up, using a swing that adds extra power and distance. It is not uncommon for the stone to be thrown overhead, or with both hands, between the legs.
The winner is whoever throws the stone the farthest.
